Embroidery hoops are highly recommended. They help you handle the embroidery fabric. They hold the fabric sandwiched between an inner ring and an outer ring. They are handy for cross-stitching as they hold a portion of the material taught for ease of stitching. Having your fabric held taut can be particularly beneficial.
