Vienna: Miles away

A collection of limited-edition cross-stitch designs.

‘Vienna: Miles away’ channels a sense of beauty and hope amidst the underlying feeling of languishing. A connection and inspiration that feels miles apart, accessible only through old travel photos, art books, social media, or our imaginations. A feeling of order and stability that glistens in the distance through both memory and a sense of longing felt in 2021.

Broida founder and designer Briar Lloyd says, “I travelled to Vienna in 2015 for a family holiday. Whilst it included the inevitable highs and lows of family dynamics, more significantly, it was a profoundly memorable trip for creative exposure and artistic inspiration. Even in the bleakness of the mid-winter, bundled up and crisp, Vienna glistened from the feeling that comes with taking in a new city along with its renowned design elements. Gold speckled throughout the cityscapes and significant artworks, culture with a capital C, and old-world geometric forms and ordered beauty that construct the city. Ironically my brother and I talked about Vienna 2020. A follow-up trip five years later, which now feels painfully humorous as we have mourned the notion of imminent global travel from the Southern Hemisphere.”

This pattern collection is inspired by the well-known forms of the Vienna Secession movement of the early 1900s, now around 100 years ago. In the present, we can recognise war and the decline of an empire were imminent. Yet, through science, psychology, literature, politics, music, fashion, the visual arts and architecture, public debate raged in the quest to find a voice that was true for modern life at this time. Vienna bubbled with a sense of dynamic metropolis at the forefront of ground-breaking ideas. This notion of an imaginative new world embraced extreme rationality in its architecture and design whilst equally encompassing the irrational and dark side of human nature. Amidst the current pandemic, we toy with entering a new modern world post-COVID19, moving past our stagnation and traditional rules. A sense of control and optimism for the outside world that glimmers with hope behind the doors of our lock-down homes.

This collection of patterns allows makers to create long-lasting mementos and creative forms to engage in through handwork. Makers can channel the energy of this time and our imagination for things far away. Soft, moody, yet calming colours are conducted into simple, clean shapes, creating order, whilst interwoven with a sparkle of optimistic gold like the hidden beauty we can choose to find in every day. A connection or glimmer of hope and inspiration miles away can come back closer to us through creation. These cross-stitch designs allow users to engage in mindful making, an outlet to channel their energy, with a contemporary creative outcome for the home and interiors, art, or as a gift to share with others.
